Five miles.
I simply can’t pass by blooming lilacs without stopping to bury my face in their fragrance.
Red-winged blackbirds preen on the tops of cattails as though buttoning tight their scarlet collars.
In Hazel’s Creek, I hear an owl’s hoo hoo, hoo hoo ricocheting from nest box to nest box. Their echoes send me on a series of wild goose chases, from tree to tree to tree to tree to tree.
Willows draw their green curtains over nests.
The feathers of the fishing great blue heron in wind glitter like jostling stacks of grey-blue dimes.
Flowers, flowers, and flowers. Tulips, irises, and marigolds. Red, purple, and pink. Yellow, blue, and white. Color, color, and color.
Color is vivid in this year’s Spring May festival.
The Wheel of Seasons spins bolts and bolts of the most luxurious of silky fabrics as Her clock continues casting each minute, each detail like the unfolding of a story.

Constellation Poem 2
Draco
Alpha
Bald eagle’s descent
Wings’ even cadence in air
Undulatory.
Beta
A puzzle of sticks
Wind moves dangling brown tendrils
Reticulation.
Gamma
White webs stitch fences
Sunlight bares their existence
Then recants to clouds.
Delta
The tree’s supple arms
Dandles birds’ nest on branches
In rhythm with wind.
Epsilon
Gamma Draconis
Snakes past the Little Dipper
The stars of Draco.

Constellation Poem 1
Ursa Minor
Alpha
Lavender lilacs
Glowing embers of fragrance
An asterism.

The chirr of crickets
Red-winged blackbirds’ trilling calls
Appliances hum.

The Sun through branches
Light tentatively enters
Lips slightly parting.
Delta
Brown branches braided
The osprey building her nest.
Sinuosity.
Epsilon
Polaris, the North Star
Travelers’ guide for centuries
Ursa Minor.

Haiku 22
(Umbra.)
Wind surges and swells
Evergreens rock side to side
A soft cradlesong.
(Penumbra.)
The bald eagle’s wings
Feathers ebbing and flowing
The pulse of a heart.
(Antumbra.)
Webs ripple in Sun
White cloudscapes undulating
An alchemy pose.
